Condition and Description
This book required treatment largely due to the brittle paper foldouts inside. There are two foldouts in the book, one larger, one smaller. The larger foldout was completely detached from the text block and torn almost completely along all the fold lines. The smaller foldout was still attached to the text block, and largely torn along all the fold lines. The text block paper was brittle as well. The caps and corners of the maroon book cloth covered case exhibited some wear. The outer hinges were split but the inner hinges were largely intact.
Treatment Summary
Mending Large Foldout
Due to this foldout being completely detached from the book, I did not need to mend it in situ. I used wheat starch paste and 7g kozo paper for the mends. After mending was complete I used a mister to lightly humidify the folds and re-fold the map.

Mending Small Foldout
The second foldout was still attached to the book. Because it was torn along most of the fold lines, I mended most of it off the book before re-attaching to the fragment attached to the book. I used wheat starch paste and 7g kozo paper for the mends.

Hinge Repair
The inner hinges were relatively stable but the outer hinges were torn. I toned 13g hanji paper using Golden Fluid Acrylics for the outer hinge mends and was able to use a previously toned green paper for the inner hinge repair.
