Activities
Here is a list of other conservation related activities I undertook while at the Steven Miller Conservation lab.
Fisher Fine Arts Materials Library
The Fisher Fine Arts Material Library "hosts thousands of samples ranging from traditional construction materials to emergent and novel samples such as Vanta Black, electronic paint, and seaweed insulation. The aim of the collection is to bring together innovation and creativity in order to advance conceptualization through tactile exploration". During my visit I looked at materials related to conservation like various handmade-papers and powdered pigments. I also saw the Vanta Black, and some 3D printed materials they hold. The collection is fascinating and largely is grown through acquisition of materials from student thesis projects.
Assembled Nilfisk
While this was a minor activity, it felt pertinent to document because while I have used a Nilfisk since I started my conservation career, I never had to put one together or taken it apart. Now I can, and am aware of the strengths and limitations of the provided instructions.
Heritage West
The website describes Heritage West: The West Philadelphia Community Archaeology Project as "a collaboration between community organizations the People’s Emergency Center CDC and the Black Bottom Tribe Association, University City Arts League and Penn Anthropologists". During my involvement I participated in two workshops hosted at the Community Education Center. One of which involved advising community member on how to care for family treasures.
